THE NewZ
A Newsletter Created by University Students Exploring Differences Between Healthcare Systems in Japan and Around the World
Japan’s universal health insurance system has enabled its citizens to access high-quality healthcare for many years. However, as the population ages and healthcare expenditures continue to rise, the sustainability of the healthcare system has become an increasingly important issue. Comparing Japan’s healthcare system with those of other countries also highlights both its strengths and the challenges that need to be addressed.
To encourage younger generations to better understand and think critically about the future of healthcare and social security, the New Era Strategy Institute and Japan Counselors launched THE NewZ, a monthly bilingual newsletter.
THE NewZ is produced by a team of university students, including international students studying overseas and interns working at Japan Counselors in Japan. Each student selects a country or region of interest and researches its healthcare system, comparing it with Japan’s from various perspectives, such as healthcare policies, medical practices, patient experiences, and cultural backgrounds. Their findings are published in both Japanese and English.
In addition to writing articles, interns at Japan Counselors are actively involved in the editorial process. As members of the editorial team, they review manuscripts, edit content, proofread articles, and prepare each issue for publication. Through these activities, students gain hands-on experience in research, writing, editing, and cross-cultural communication while contributing to discussions on global healthcare systems.
The title “THE NewZ” is inspired by Generation Z, reflecting the project’s mission to empower young people to take the lead in planning, writing, and editing the newsletter. By sharing diverse perspectives on healthcare systems around the world, THE NewZ aims to inspire readers to think about the future of healthcare in Japan and beyond.
